چکیده

Beyond the Pleasure Principle, 1 published in 1920, is an altogether extraordinary work that, with its amazing twists and turns, is by no means easy to follow or to comprehend. In viewing his essay in frankly speculative terms, Freud undertakes to advance his theory of psychoanalysis into new domains of the mental processes, while having no intention of giving up his earlier findings. We shall find, however, that his claim to go beyond the pleasure principle not only threatens but even compromises and ultimately undermines, if not his earlier insights into the depths of the human psyche, at least the speculative principles in terms of how they are formulated. The extraordinary thing is that, while Freud presupposes his work of the previous twenty-five years in writing Beyond the Pleasure Principle, the essay puts in jeopardy not merely the conceptual coherence but even the validity of that prior work. Freud now finds that the dualism between the pleasure principle and the reality principle, in terms of which he had come to understand the opposition between the two categories of instincts fundamental to the mental processes, the sexual instincts and the ego instincts, and succinctly articulated in his paper of 1911, "Formulations on the Two Principles of Mental Functioning," cannot account for newly discerned perturbations of mind that he categorizes under "the compulsion to repeat." To explain these new disturbances Freud proposes what he frankly acknowledges to be an "often far-fetched speculation which the reader will consider or dismiss according to his individual predilection" (1920, p. 295). He shows that the reason he is compelled to propose a new speculative framework for psychoanalysis is that the pleasure principle, as he formulates it in the opening sentence of Beyond the Pleasure Principle--"the course taken by mental events is automatically regulated by the pleasure prindple"-is no longer adequate (p. 275). Indeed, Freud is quick to point out that, "Strictly speaking, it is incorrect to talk of the dominance of the pleasure principle over the course

Beyond the Pleasure Principle

While Freud did not explicitly make this claim, one may regard Beyond the Pleasure Principle (1920) as the first, still somewhat tentative resolution of the troubling theoretical problem he had raised in the paper on narcissism (see above, pp. 545-62). The Ego and the Id, published three years later, was his second, definitive response. He now replaced the pairing of driveslibidinal and egoisti...

Freud’s Concept of the Death Drive and its Relation to the Superego

This paper addresses the emergence of the ‘death drive’ in Sigmund Freud’s later work, and the significance of this development for his psychoanalytic theory as a whole. In particular, the paper argues that the ‘death drive’ is a pivotal concept, articulating a connection between what are commonly understood as the ‘lower’ and ‘higher’ functions of the psyche. Moreover, the death drive is pivot...

Before the pleasure principle: translation and its vicissitudes.

While from the point of view of precise translation, "desire and delight" may, perhaps, be the most accurate English equivalent, some additional factors may be worth considering before it is assumed that the translation is Freud's conception. The foremost consideration is that Freud's (1880) translation of Mill's (1866) essay on Plato regularly renders "pleasure" as Lust. The idea of a principl...

Psychoanalytic Theories of Religion in Protestant Contexts

Psychoanalysts since Sigmund Freud have tried to discuss the role of religion in modern societies. Freud himself saw religion as an illusion which had struck neurotics, while Slavoj Žižek viewed it as some sort of “perversion” which functioned in the cycle of law-transgression. In this essay, I dig into these theories to uncover traces of Lutheran interpretations of Paul’s words on the Jewish l...
